Carotid Artery Exam
The carotid arteries supply blood to the brain. A complete carotid artery examination includes measurement of blood pressure in both arms and ultrasound of the carotid arteries, vertebral arteries and the subclavian arteries on both sides.
A carotid artery ultrasound may be ordered by your physician to evaluate for plaque build-up in the arteries that supply blood to the brain which can lead to a stroke.
Stroke symptoms include but are not limited to:
- One sided loss of strength or numbness
- Difficulty speaking
- Visual disturbance
Risk factors for carotid artery disease include:
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Family History
- Heart Disease (coronary artery disease)
Your doctor may recommend a consult with one of our vascular physicians if there is a narrowing in the carotid artery of 80% or more. Many patients have only mild to moderate carotid artery disease. We recommend follow up exams as a means to assess progression of disease over time.
