Arteriogram
An arteriogram is an x-ray examination to delineate the arterial circulation.
Any artery in the body may be viewed using a catheter and x-ray dye. A common
test is the “transfemoral arteriogram” performed through the groin
(femoral artery) and used to x-ray the thoracic or abdominal aorta, kidney
blood supply, and circulation to the legs.
An arteriogram is used both to evaluate
aneurysms and atherosclerotic blockage. Currently, many blockages can be treated
by angioplasty and stent placement at the time of the arteriogram.
Frequently
treated in this manner are narrowing of the renal, iliac, and femoral arteries.
If an aneurysm is found requring repair an operative procedure will be necessary,
either stent grafting or open repair. An arteriogram is an outpatient procedure
in most cases, unless the patient is admitted for surgical therapy.
