Carotid Stenting
Treatment for carotid artery blockage has traditionally been handled with open surgery requiring a one day hospital stay. Currently another option is available to selected patients, that of carotid stenting. This procedure is reserved for certain patients who have previously undergone surgery, are not surgical candidates, or have special situations such as radiation exposure to the neck. The stent is placed in the arteriogram suite and has the advantage of avoiding general anesthesia.
CVT Surgical Center under the direction of Dr Mike Davis participated in the
national stent trials (SAPPHIRE) to determine risks and effectiveness. The
results show carotid stenting to be similar to but not necessarily superior
to operative treatment. Treatment decisions are made on an individual basis
for each patient in discussion with the surgeon.
