Lower Extremity Arterial Exam
This test utilizes blood pressure cuffs which are placed at different intervals of the leg to obtain pulse volume recordings and blood pressure readings at these various levels. Digit analysis is also available.
In selected patients, the measurements obtained with the patient at rest are compared to those obtained after a brief treadmill walk to further enhance the accuracy of the exam. Patients with a cardiac history, orthopedic restrictions, or general debility are examined only at rest.
The pressures are compared to the brachial arm pressure and an ankle/arm index is calculated. This exam allows the physician to pin-point the level and severity of lower extremity insufficiency.
A duplex ultrasound exam of the arteries can also be performed, allowing visualization and Doppler flow information to analyze arterial insufficiency and graft patency.
