Lower Extremity Venous Exam
Duplex ultrasound exam of the femoral triangle, popliteral and posterior tibial veins is performed, These vessels are examined for compressibility, augmentation and valve competence.
Superficial vessels can also be examined, such as the greater and lesser sapenous, anterior tibial and other calf veins.
A plethysmography exam is then performed by placing cuffs on the patient's leg and measuring the rate and degree of pressure change in the leg, which could indicate more proximal thrombosis or obstruction.
CLINICAL CONDITIONS:
- Deep venous thrombosis - diagnosis and follow-up.
- Superficial thrombophlebitis - to differentiate from deep venous thrombosis.
- Follow efficacy of anticoagulant therapy in confirmed thrombosis
SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS:
- Leg pain or heaviness.
- Swelling.
- Cyanosis.
- Positive Homan's sign
